- You can, but you will be restricted to riding a 125 once you passed your test. To be suitable for the standard 'A' test, the bike must be learner legal, between 121cc and 125cc, and capable of at least 100kmh (62mph). Your 100cc bike will qualify for the Small motorcycle test only
- No, you will be restricted to riding a bike with a maximum power output of 25kw (33bhp) for
2 years after passing your test. - If you are 21 or more, you can take the Direct Access course to by-pass this restriction.
125cc pre-test training
You can only hold a provisional motorcycle licence if you are at least 17 years old. It entitles you to ride a learner legal motorcycle on the road as a learner with L-plates but you must not carry a pillion passenger or go on a motorway.
Your provisional licence is only valid when you have the DL 196 certificate issued on completion of compulsory basic training (CBT) by an approved training body (ATB). A CBT certificate obtained on a moped is also valid for motorcycles once the rider has reached the age of 17 years and has the necessary licence.

Direct Access (DAS)
What is direct access?
Direct access (DAS) is a scheme which allows a person over the age of 21 to avoid the two year/25 kW restriction by taking a test on a machine of at least 35 kW (46.6 bhp).
Requirements before taking a DAS Course.- A current provisional licence, showing category 'A', or full car licence.
- A current DL 196 (CBT) certificate.
- Be at least 21 years of age.
Any instruction given on a machine that exceeds the normal learner motorcycle specification must be supervised by a certified motorcycle instructor. You cannot practice for the test on your own. The instructor must be qualified by the DSA to teach DAS, and must be in radio contact with you at all times.
The DAS course will be tailored to suit your needs. An experienced rider may only need 2 or even just 1 day to prepare for the test, but a novice will need up to 5, occasionally even more.
Why not take a free 1 hour assessment ride with us, and we will discuss what we believe you need.
What is Accelerated Access?
Accelerated access is the same as Direct Access, except it is for people who have already passed the Standard or Small motorcycle test, so is likely to require less training.
This may be because you reach the age of 21 before your 2 year restriction ends, or you have now found the confidence to give a big bike a go.
